The slide in commodities prices offers agriculture players and smallholders in Sarawak the opportunity to venture further into the downstream industries. Despite weak commodities prices, demand for food remains robust with growing population and changing lifestyles of the people. With healthy demand for food and agriculture produce, smallholders and agriculture players should capitalise on producing more for commercialiastion as they could enjoy higher return from their businesses. Sarawak, with its vast amount of land and rich in natural resources, has the potential to enhance the development of the downstream industries especially food processing. The activity under the River of Life Public Outreach Programme Phase 5 (ROLPOP5) is an initiative by Friends of Klang River Mid Valley (FoSK MV) with the aim to clean up the riverbank and improve water quality of Klang River. The NGOs involved were Trash Hero Kuala Lumpur, Global Environment Centre (GEC), Karun Hijau, Malaysian Eco-Brickers, Friends of Klang River Basin as well as FoSK MV, which led the clean-up. PETALING JAYA: No matter where they may be, John Wan Usang and Juvita Tatan Wan always make it a point to return to their longhouse in Long San, upper Baram. With every trip back to their hometown, they realised that their communities in Sarawak were not only being left behind, but were also losing their cultural heritage. This led to The Tuyang Initiative, co-founded by John, 64, and Juvita, 34.
