New digital innovations are transforming everyday business transactions and marketing, opening up new opportunities and creative ways for startups, entrepreneurs or small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to reach out to consumers on both domestic and international fronts.
From March 19-20, Sarawak Multimedia Authority in collaboration with Angkatan Zaman Mansang (AZAM) Sarawak held the second edition of its Community Digital Initiative workshop series at SMA-TEGAS Digital Innovation Hub, Bintulu.
SMA-AZAM’s workshop on building community awareness on digital economy in Bintulu was an important initiative by both organisations to transform Sarawak’s conventional economy to a digital economy.
Associate Professor Dr Johari Abdullah gave the participants an overview of IR 4.0 in his presentation called “Memastikan masyarakat luar bandar Sarawak yang ‘digital-ready’”
Conducted by representatives from government and private sectors such as SMA, University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), and local industry players, the workshop aimed to empower Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK) and entrepreneurs with relevant e-commerce marketing skills and networking that could enable them to mobilise their respective communities to initiate activities that promote and nurture the digital economy.
Approximately 50 participants comprising selected JKKK members and local entrepreneurs from Bintulu Division attended this one-and-a-half-day workshop.
The main objectives of this workshop were to provide a platform for local community leaders and JKKK to play their role as state development frontliners in motivate and mobilise their communities to be digital-ready. To achieve this objective, a representative from SMA gave a summary of Sarawak’s digital economy strategy to better facilitate participants’ understanding and implementation of digital initiatives within their communities.

Other workshop highlights were knowledge sharing sessions from successful industry players like apparel and accessories entrepreneur Neng Kho Razali, on how to leverage on digital platforms to market original Bornean designs to the international market, and agro-based entrepreneur Heineken Laluan on packaging, shipping, and selling local produce to global markets.

Bintulu Deputy Resident Hussaini Hakim represented Samalaju assemblyman Majang Renggi as he officiated the closing ceremony where workshop participants also received their certificates of participation.
The first edition of this workshop was held in Lawas last year.
