Built in 1863 by Kuching mayor Datuk Bandar Abang Haji Kassim, this building was the biggest palatial size Malay house in Kuching at the time. It is said that this house was able to fit up to 20 families in any given time. Known to the locals as ‘Rumah Batu’ (The Stone House), it was the first Malay house built using stones and concrete, the first of its kind in a time where houses were primarily built using wood. Having survived a sacking by Japanese army during Japanese Occupation in Sarawak, this building remains standing as an indomitable part of Sarawakian history.
